Experiences of Children Who Have Witnessed Violence Between Their Parents

Abstract

|
Objective: This study was conducted to understand the experience of children who had witnessed violence between their parents and to seek practical measures for working with them.
Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with seven teenagers who had witnessed violence between their parents. Data from the interviews were analyzed using Giorgi’s phenomenological study method in order to derive the essence and meanings of the participants’ experiences.
Results: By categorizing the data into 18 themes, the author extracted 116 clear meanings and formed 8 central meanings. Based on central meanings such as “Mother is lackadaisical in response to violence” and “I take after my father,” the experience of children who had witnessed violence between their parents was summarized as “Struggling in a trap of parents’ unhappy life.”
Conclusion: The author offered practice and policy intervention guidelines for the development of programs that target children who have witnessed violence between their parents.
