Objective: This study was conducted to understand the experience of children who had witnessed violence between their parents and to seek practical measures for working with them.
Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with seven teenagers who had witnessed violence between their parents. Data from the interviews were analyzed using Giorgi¡¯s phenomenological study method in order to derive the essence and meanings of the participants¡¯ experiences.
Results: By categorizing the data into 18 themes, the author extracted 116 clear meanings and formed 8 central meanings. Based on central meanings such as ¡°Mother is lackadaisical in response to violence¡± and ¡°I take after my father,¡± the experience of children who had witnessed violence between their parents was summarized as ¡°Struggling in a trap of parents¡¯ unhappy life.¡±
Conclusion: The author offered practice and policy intervention guidelines for the development of programs that target children who have witnessed violence between their parents.
